Brian Carroll, Captain of the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad, was named Squad Member of the Year Saturday night at the annual rescue squad banquet.

The squad member of the year typically goes to the person who "busted their hump all year," said Rescue Squad President John Treier.

In all, the Isle of Wight Rescue Squad responded to 2,275 calls with an improved average response time of 1:05 per call, Carroll said.

Carroll also mentioned, to the county officials present — Smithfield Supervisor Tom Ivy, Assistant County Administrator Patrick Small and Director of Emergency Management Richard Childress —that the squad needs more ambulances.

The squad also honored Tommy Taylor, a former member who died in 2006, as well as Auxiliary volunteer of the year, Barbara Rawls.
